Tell us something about you that most people don't know about.
Ans: I guess I'm good at editing videos, creating cinematic video collages. I recently picked up this skill when I learnt how to use Sony Vegas software. So far, I've done quite a few things with it that I'm quite satisfied with. What is something you wish you can change about yourself? Ans: That would be my attitude towards unfamiliar environment. Be it in studies as well, going to a new study… I typically embrace things with a sense of curiosity. But other than curiosity, if it's something I don't really feel comfortable with, I can feel a sense of negativity towards it. And when that happens, I find that it takes a lot more effort for me to overcome that negativity to push myself on. To push myself on to achieve the goal I want to. But as long as I dedicate effort to a particular thing, there will be a time that will come that I become comfortable with it. Tell us about the world you grew up in. Ans: Well… The world I grew up in, I can really say it's quite benign. I've never been troubled by poverty, I have access to everything I can wish for. Education, shelter, everything. That really makes me sympathize with people who don't have such things. That is why I dedicate effort in taking part in charity events. For example, SRS (Students Responding to Students), where I helped a bunch of migrant children learn English, gave them a good time, planned a scientific demonstration for them. Which is nice to see these kids who generally won't have, and generally never will have laboratory equipment, play around with those things for themselves, getting their hands on those test tubes. It reminds me how even a very simple reaction, a very non-dangerous reaction like sodium carbonate and vinegar can amaze them. To think that I had originally planned a combustible reaction involving sugar and potassium chloride, that is when you will have a gun powder like effect if you mix the two together. I come from a well-developed family who has a considerable amount of funds and can afford good housing, good heating, good shelter, and other people simply may not have that. So I feel that by participating in these events and helping people, I may providing what I have that they don't have for them, at least a part of it. Share a quote with us that you believe in/shares your ideologies of life. Ans: Well, I'm not a person who remembers quotes well. But I do remember a lot of quotes about failures. A lot of people, celebrities, scientists, aviators, even politicians, they have all said the same things. I will try my best to rephrase it, but not precisely. It says that, "Failures are precursors to success." I'm sure everyone has heard of it. I believe that's very true. It's inspired when I fail, when I absolutely bomb a test, it teaches me how not to bomb the next one. Be it from academics, or even my hobby. For example, I'm an avid flight simulator and whenever something happens - I miss a procedure or the aircraft crashes completely, I learn from that. I will go back and take a look at the checklist and procedures manual and learn from that failure what I've done wrong. I believe it is only through failure that one can truly achieve success. Ans: I think I blab everything else. Um… I own six pets. A dog, a hamster, a turtle and the rest I forgot… I don't know, I just… I guess the fact that I lived in a lot of countries, like Japan, Malaysia, China, France… Yeah. What is something you wish to change about yourself? Ans: I guess my height, I'm short. And maybe a better eyesight. I don't know, it's like… I guess people like to make fun of my height. I mean it's okay, because they've been calling me small ever since I was born. It would be nice if I was like, tall for once. Who is your inspiration? Ans: Malala Yousafzai. I read a book about her, her biography. And I was touched, I guess, about how a 14 year old could do something like that. So you're never too young to do something as incredible about that. I feel like I become more peaceful after reading the book. I hope I can do something like she did, that'll be nice. Because it changes the world, if I could help people like that, that'll be good. Share a quote with us that you believe in/shares your ideologies of life. Ans: It is not who we are that we are born as, it is who we grow into. I think I read it somewhere, and I remember it because… As long as you become something in life, it's okay what you start with. Tell us something about you that most people don't know about.
Ans: Okay, I’m tone deaf. But I’ve been in musical groups all my life. So, I play several instruments, like the piano, the harmonica and several Chinese instruments, and I’m learning the guitar now. So I’m tone dear so I can’t hear the difference between the chords and everything and I can’t sing. But I can play. What impact do you want to leave on the world? Ans: Well, I would like to love should it come with conditions. That will be something that I hope to leave, maybe not even in the world, like in students and people that pass through my life. Yeah. Tell us about the world you grew up in. Ans: I grew up in Singapore, a village, one of the last kampongs in Singapore. So, erm, it was a very conservative life. I grew up in a kind of world where boys are always preferred to girls. I have an equal chance in education but it was a world where there was a lot of gender prejudice. So it has always been unfair. From the very beginning to the end, even in employment, in payment, in promotion. So, that is not a world that I particularly liked. Share a quote with us that you believe in/shares your ideologies of life. Ans: Live in the present. There's no right or wrong, but you should live life to the fullest without hurting others. Tell us something about you that most people don't know about.
Ans: Some people may not know that I had hair half-way down my back. I imagine you find that to imagine now! People used to think I look like Jesus Christ. And… Ah! I used to have the most crooked teeth in the world. I had teeth coming out just below my nostril! Yeah but after I had braces I actually had pride in my teeth. Also, most people wouldn't know that I've got 2 kids that are trying to be professional sports people. I got a daughter that would like to make the Olympics as a field hockey player. And my son is today (Feb 6, 2015) playing his first game of first-class cricket. So, he's in a position where you could get a professional contract. And I was really pleased with him for taking a gamble, because he had to give up a lot of things to get there. So… long hair, ugly teeth, sporty kids… I've got the ugliest feet in the world. I've got feet that are virtually square so… I could swap them with a duck and not too many people would notice. What are the jobs you had before becoming a teacher? Ans: When I finished school , I was only 16. So I had actually made up my mind not to do Uni so I just went and worked for a couple of year. I worked in the public service, just as a clerk. Then I did my degree. During my degree, which I did chemical engineering, I worked as a student engineer for a lot of the time. Then… well I realized during my degree that I didn't really want to become a chemical engineer, so first two years was a waste, wasn't it? I actually sort of made up my mind that I was going to be a teacher, but I didn't think that I needed to actually start doing that just yet. So I've just done a variety of jobs. I worked as a chainman surveyor, I did hitches on drilling routes, I sold time share, I worked in a glass aluminum factory (really crappy job) and I've probably done some other jobs as well. Then I went to teachers' college and I've become a teacher. And I've only worked as a teacher since. I think the favorite part is the fact that I can say that everyday, I have done something good. Everyday, I teach, someone must have learnt something, even by accident from me. And therefore I've done some good. And that's what I don't think I could have said if I stayed as a engineer. I wouldn't be doing good the same way. Other than that though, I think I just like kids and half the time I am a kid! I enjoy teaching and it's nice. Did you get into trouble in school? Ans: Erh… There are some secrets you can't tell! Well, I got in trouble quite often at school. Alright, I got into trouble really often. Partly because I was quite bright and got quite bored, partly because in junior high school we were forced to do subjects that I had no interests in, and partly because I was perhaps new to the school and was trying to impress the wrong people… I don't really know why I was naughty. I was very painful to teachers, I was often distracted, rude and cheeky. I did lots of things that I shouldn't have been doing. So specific instances when I was naughty… I climbed out the window to get away from class. And the door… well, the teacher was there! Share a quote with us that you believe in/shares your ideologies of life. Ans: Well.. It was an old golfer, when someone said to him, that was a lucky shot. He said, you know I practiced that shot a hundred times a night, and the more I practice the luckier I get. So, I do like that one. Tell us something about you that most people don't know about.
Ans: Well... I love Japanese culture because i'm influenced by my family as my great grandma was a Japanese. So i guess i have a little Japanese blood in it. What impact do you want to leave on the world? Ans: I want to be successful person. I wanted to become an artist and open my own gallery in future, where everyone can know my art and know my name... What was a defining moment of your life? Ans: There were some huge ones, but what I remember was this year's Grease Musical at SSIS. This year was the only year that i felt excited and happy about performing and try my best to perform on stage. I use to be nervous and have stage fright, but now i enjoyed being on the stage with my friends. And i love the feeling when the spotlight shine on me and i can see the air is full of glitter. Share a quote with us that motives you/shares your ideas of life. Ans: Well, I don't have a quote that I remember or motivates me... but I do have a scripture from the Bible that always motivates me and encourage me. "-- Put your hope in God for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God."(Psalm 43:5) These past few weeks, I feel really downcast, and I felt like there are many things in life that just goes against me. I lose my concentration and feel depressed about everything. I felt like reading this cheers me up and motivates me to do my work. Tell us something about you that most people don’t know about.
Ans: I love research. And I love new ways of learning. And how to make the curriculum very interested. Because one of my objectives of life is to be an editor for my book. Therefore, I spend most of my time researching a lot on the content and also how students would interested with the knowledge. Because basically I’m teaching science and science is one thing which everyone need to find it out from the day-to-day’s life. And I always try to go make things from day-to-day life with learning. That makes me to be very much aloof. I tend to stay away and get in more with medicines. Who is your inspiration? Ans: They are many people who inspire us. But ultimately the means is the good thoughts that they people put. Since I am a very religious person, so at this moment one thing comes to mind that I keep telling everyone who is in desperate position. So I just quote two lines that if something happens as per my wish, it’s good. But if something doesn’t happen as per my wish, it’s more good. Because wish is of the God’s wish cause I cannot understand now. So I think such kind of things, such kind of thoughts to keep me balanced, to keep me going. What is one memory that you will never forget? Ans: I’d like to take you to my school days. When I was in grade one probably, and I still remember. That it was a fun story to check whether I can burn something. So I went from my house to the neighbouring forest and just tried to burn some straw. It was very jubilant to see the straw burning. But the time has come when the fire broke out of control and I just left that place. And in the next few moments, I found that the fire started moving rapidly and in no time the complete forest was gone. So, I still carry that kind of, like I destroyed something. That’s why I’m a farmer and I’ve taken the subject that is, Biology. I try to do things with plants, I learn plant agriculture, so I’m really close to the plants. But whenever somebody asks, that thing comes to my mind. It is that I have destroyed so many plants. So, it’s a black mark on my heart. Share a quote with us that you believe in/shares your ideologies of life. Ans: Life is something which you need to just take it the way it comes to you. You need to lead it as you are in a life condition. Don’t try to keep it, like I live my life tomorrow. You don’t know whether that day will come, to live or to lead in the way you plan. So it’s better to live what you want today. Don’t try to postpone the things like, postpone you enjoyment, postpone your moments, postpone your feelings. Just express it. There’s no right moment or right time. It’s always good to live a life life. Tell us something about you that most people don't know about.
Ans: People don’t know that… Even though I am a out going person and it seems like I just live happily everyday but when I am alone, I actually think a lot. I always try to think about things from different perspectives and make myself confused and miserable. What's the worst advice you've ever taken? Ans: There’s a lot but one of it that I remember was skipping class and going onto the roof top in Kindergarten and I almost fell off. I didn’t think that much when my friend whispered to me and he told me it’s safe so I just went but I almost slipped off. What is the most important thing in your life? Ans: People around me. Especially people that I care about such as friends and families. I have to admit that I rely a lot on people and I cannot survive on my own or without any of my friends or families. They are always there to help you and give you advises or even talk to you when you’re upset. When people interact with people for a period of time, there will be feelings and emotions. Some people can become so important in your life that they can become as close as families. So people around me is the most important thing in my life.
